Abstract:
In the middle and late 19th century, many countries around the Pacific Ocean discovered gold deposits, which triggered the largest worldwide gold rush, and attracted a large number of Chinese workers from southeastern coastal areas of China to go abroad, forming the first upsurge of overseas migration of modern Chinese.Although gold-rushing Chinese workers did not set foot in New Zealand until the late half of the 19th century, almost 152 years ago, trade between China and New Zealand began in the early 1870s and has lasted for more than 240 years. In the 19th century, with the increasing number of gold-rushing Chinese workers in New Zealand,New Zealand exports to China mainly Auricularia auricula and New Zealand specialty gold, while China exports to New Zealand mainly tea and basic consumer goods favored by white British immigrants.Although the trade between the two countries is small in quantity and few in variety, the economic trade between the ancient empire and the remote island countries beyond the boundaries of the sea has been maintained connection.Whether it is an ancient China that does not attach importance to foreign trade in this period,or a young New Zealand that mainly trades with English-speaking countries,it is an exceptional historical phenomenon in its own history. In the second half of the 19th century,a considerable number of Guangzhou gold prospectors who stayed in New Zealand for many years have been sticking to their "traveling life" and seldom involved in commercial and trade activities.
